Hole 16 — 387 yards, Par 4
MacKenzie's favorite par 4, the 16th at Pasatiempo strikes fear into the hearts of nearly all who play it. A blind tee shot calls for some intelligent planning, precise placement with a draw. Too far left, the ball ends up in a barranca, and too far right is OB. Even the best drive leaves a long, downhill second shot to a three-tiered elevated green, guarded by an array of green side bunkers. Be on target or risk severe penalties; the green rests behind a deep barranca and stream below.

A draw is the perfect shot on this hole as it helps the ball roll downhill making the approach shorter. If you are particularly accurate but don’t draw the ball you can play your drive slightly left of the aiming flag on the hill. This is one of the most amazing greens in golf. It appears to have three levels but a ball will never stop on that lower portion. When the pin is white and left, on that little bit of the green above the left bunker, the best approach shot is aimed at the yellow traffic sign in the background, and the shot should be past the hole onto the upper level. It is easier to putt slightly down to that pin than it is to putt up to it from the middle portion.
